Appointment of Interpreters for the Deaf
Colorado Revised Statutes, 13-90-201
It is the policy of this state to secure the rights of persons who, because they are deaf or hard of hearing, cannot readily understand or communicate in spoken language and who consequently cannot equally participate in or benefit from proceedings of the courts or any board, commission, agency, or licensing or law enforcement authority of the state or any of its political subdivisions unless qualified interpreters are available to assist them.

Sign Language Interpreters must meet the following criteria to qualify for interpreting in the legal setting:
 Certified by the national credentialing body for sign language interpreters, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or the National Association of the Deaf.
 Complete at least 40 hours of specialized legal training.
 Complete at least 25 hours of interpreting in the legal setting under the supervision of a legally qualified interpreter.
 Abide by a professional Code of Ethics requiring neutrality, confidentiality, and using discretion with regard to skill, setting and consumers involved (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Code of Ethics).
