Pat Himes-any organization that has multiple locations and distance between the locations always struggles with communication. A challenge CRID faces is new leadership learning the ropes and processes. We need to support the leadership and figure out ways to better communicate. It seems we are writing a new rule to protect CRID District funds that is not necessary. Based on the letter from the CRID Executive Board, some district representatives responded, some did not, but the majority ruled. What could have been done to prevent hard feelings, was to send the membership a letter once the decision was made to all the members explaining what was done.

Dear Tricia,

First of all I want to thank you for using your voice within our organization to let us know what you’re concerned about. In regards to your statement about membership year, I would like to apologize for the misunderstanding. First of all, while that statement was made in an email sent out to our membership on September 30, 2011 by the Vice President, the actual membership year for Colorado RID is from July 1 through June 30 the following year. This is per our bylaws as you pointed out. The membership year has not and will not be changed unless a revision request to the bylaws is submitted and voted upon at our 2012 business meeting.

We as a new Board are still adjusting as quickly as we can to our new positions. We are apt to make mistakes here and there. We are but imperfect people and claim to be nothing more. There is nothing on our website, membership form, or any meeting minutes indicating a change in the CRID membership year.

Therefore, I ask for your understanding in this situation of miscommunication and misunderstanding. We are NOT the former board. We are attempting to do everything in our power to help better the organization of CRID as a whole. That’s always been our intent. Yes, we will make mistakes. But, so would anyone else in our shoes entering into these offices with no formal training. The Vice President has always had good intentions and has done a tremendous job in working with Colby to get our website to where it is today. He has spent many hours above and beyond the rest of our board in doing everything possible to help automate many of our processes and to bring us to the current age of technology. I will continue to support him and the rest of my Board until something warrants me to do different. This issue does not fall into that category of something.

In closing, I want to thank you again for voicing your concern. I and the rest of the Board will continue to be available in any way to the CRID membership. We want to continue to encourage each of our members to use their voice within the organization. We also want to encourage anyone who might be interested to attend our upcoming Board meeting next month. Please let me know if there are any other questions or issues you might have. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Tami Sparks
President, ColoradoRID

I am not able to comment about Western Slopes' letter since I have no information regarding their concerns. I do, however, want to comment about a couple of statements in the reply from the President. You stated that "We as the Executive Board are fully aware of the current Bylaws and Policies and Procedures" and "We would never do anything to go against our Bylaws or the Policies and Procedures that have been established." Here is how Article IX: Membership Fees, Dues and Assessments, E. reads: 'The CRID membership year shall be July 1 through June 30. Dues for all membership categories shall be due July 1 of each year.'

As stated in an email from the Vice President, and as evident on our web site, "This means that when you pay for your membership, and fill out the membership form, you will be granted access and have membership for one year from the date that your membership was paid and/or processed." This is in direct contradiction to our Bylaws!

How will this be resolved?

Thank you Pat for your voice within this organization. To answer your question about meeting minutes, there is a draft version of our meeting minutes posted. Our goal as the new Executive Board is to give visibility to those minutes within one to two weeks of the meeting. Please remember they are not the approved meeting minutes. You can find them in the top navigation bar under the heading " CRID'S Organization", then click on "Meeting Minutes".

FIrst and foremost, I applaud Tami and Dan as they navigate through the State wide issues, with the common goal of bringing us together as a profession. Also, I commend Western Slope for expressing concerns regarding the recent discussion regarding Board Meetings. As a member driven entity, the integrity of CRID depends on the transparency of the Board and the rights of the member to voice any and all concerns either in a public forum or at meetings. My interpretation of Tami and Dan's plan ( upon approval), was that they would travel to each district in effort to form a cohesive relationship with members/board/colleagues. Kind of a "here we are , lets meet face to face, get to know you and help resolve any district issues NOW." Email and texts can be so easily misunderstood. However, if Dan and Tami are sitting right there in the meetings, sleeves rolled up, with a true passion and vision.. that will have more of an impact than a SKYPE meeting or an email conversation. Districts would not be required to travel each time, and we would have some sort of telecom system to assist those that are unable to travel.
The task at hand is not a simple one, primarily due to the size and geographical seperation of out State. Our current Board has several options to amalgamate the Districts, none are easy and none are burden free.

I feel confident that our President and Vice-President will honor the integrity of the By-Laws, Policies and Procedures and member approval..
I invite and encourage each and everyone one you to attend board meetings, voice your concerns on the message boards, call your District Representative for issues that need to be discussed at a State level.

CRID struggled for awhile to find new leadership. The new leadership has been enthusiastic and responsive to our members. As in any new position, there is a learning curve. You need to trust those who have stepped forward to be the leaders and give them our support, not our criticism. Based on the two letters, it appears that the Western Slope members had misinformation. Nothing was passed or changed, only discussed. In addition, did any of the Western Slope members approach the leadership and ask them directly about the issues? Give the leadership the opportunity to confirm what was said at the board meetings? Are there minutes from the board meeting that confirms what happened? Because our organization covers the whole state, it is challenging to make sure correct information is shared with everyone. This should be chalked up to miscommunication and not anyone purposefully trying to do something without membership approval.
